Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of getting your business named in the answer itself, not just in a list of links. That means Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets along with assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini. It is done by writing clear answers to real questions, marking pages up with accurate structured data, and keeping your business facts consistent everywhere a machine can read them.
H&M Strategies builds the AEO layer into every site we manage. This page explains what we actually do, why it works, and what it will not do.
Search used to end with a page of ten links. More of it now ends with a written answer, assembled by a model that read a handful of sources and decided which ones to name. Answer engine optimization is the practice of being one of those sources.
The mechanics are less exotic than the name suggests. A model needs to find a page that states an answer plainly, confirm that the page belongs to a real business, and trust that the details line up with what it sees elsewhere. Vague marketing copy fails all three tests. A page that says what you do, where you do it, what it costs to get started, and how long it takes passes them.
AEO does not replace SEO. The same crawlers, the same content, and much of the same authority feed both. What changes is how the content is written and structured, and that the win condition is a citation rather than a click.
Six pieces of work that make a business quotable.
Every important page opens with two or three sentences that answer the question the page is about, before any sales language. That paragraph is what gets lifted into a snippet or an AI answer.
Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, BreadcrumbList, and Article markup, consolidated into one clean block per page. Marked-up claims must appear in the visible content, or the markup becomes a liability.
We collect the questions your customers actually ask on the phone and answer them on the page in their words. Question keywords are where AI answers pull from most, and they are usually the least competitive terms you own.
One consistent business name, address, phone, service list, and service area across your site, your Google Business Profile, and every directory. Conflicting facts are the most common reason a model refuses to name a business.
A clean sitemap, sane robots rules that do not block your own rendering files, and an llms.txt summary of who you are and what you sell. Cheap to add, and it removes the guesswork.
We run the buying questions in your market through the major assistants on a schedule, note who gets named and what gets said about you, and feed that back into the next round of content.
Treat them as two budgets and you will pay twice for one result. An assistant citing your page still had to find that page, which is SEO. A page that ranks but reads like a brochure gets skipped in the answer, which is AEO. Run together, one round of writing serves both.
Earns the ranking, the map pack position, and the crawl priority that puts your page in front of a model in the first place. Nothing about AI answers removes the need to be indexed and trusted.
Makes the page easy to quote and hard to misread, so you get named in the answer instead of watching a competitor get named while you sit at position four.
The honest caveat: an AI citation does not always send a click. Some buyers read the answer and move on. What it does buy you is being the business the assistant recommends when someone asks who to call, which matters more in a local market than a traffic number does.
Businesses whose customers ask questions before they buy get the most out of AEO. That includes professional services and practices, where people research at length, and local service companies, where the deciding question is often just "who should I call." Trade businesses sit squarely in the second group, which is why we added the AEO layer across our contractor SEO and construction SEO pages first.
It matters least for businesses that sell on impulse or price alone. If that is you, we will say so rather than sell you a program you do not need. See what the rest of the work looks like on SEO for small business and local SEO services.
